First of all, I sincerely appreciate your interest in my research and in the activities of our group. Thank you for taking the time to explore my webpages.

So you are interested in working with me. Like other professors. I am looking for self-motivated and hardworking students (undergraduate, MS, and Ph.D. students, female/male, domestic and international).

Before you send me an email, you may want to take time to learn what I am doing. See my research introduction slide and VizUS’ YouTube channel (you may also want to check my Google Scholar as well) to understand the research I am doing and want to do at USU.

To join VizUS, you have to be an enrolled student at Utah State University (USU). I cannot hire anyone from outside of USU. In addition, you have to be interested and enthusiastic about working on my research areas. Take your time to learn about my research before you contact me.

If you join the lab, you will have your desk and VR-ready computer. Furthermore, you can use all VR/AR/Vis facilities, both hardware and software.

#1. If you are interested in doing some research projects in Visualization, Visual Analytics (Vis + DL/AI), and VR/AR without a research assistantship (but possibly with a teaching assistantship from the CS department):

I am welcoming any students who are interested in joining my lab. I have many facilities for Vis/VR/AR research (Vive, Hololens2, etc) in my research lab and I would love to be your advisor for your research. You will be a member of VizUS and have access to the facilities. I can also provide you with a desk and a workstation upon their availability. You will learn state-of-the-art techniques in my research areas, and I am sure it will be a lot of fun. Please feel free to send me an email with the subject title  Prospective Student: Your first and last name #1″ (e.g.,  VizUS Prospective Student: John Doe  #1″). In your email, please attach the following documents:

  • your CV (or resume)
  • Transcript

#2. If you are looking for a research assistantship (GRA, Ph.D. student preferred):

Currently I have 2 GRA positions are available. The RA jobs will be available to Ph.D. students who are good at at least one of the following skills (D3, WebGL, three.js, OpenGL, Unity) with strong computer programming skills (C++, Javascript, etc). Prior experience in at least one of the following areas is a plus: data analysis (with Python, R), ML/DL/AI and VR/AR/MR.

I totally get that finding funding is a big deal for you. Please understand that my budget isn’t unlimited, so I have to be really thoughtful about bringing on students who will truly thrive in my research environment. One solid way you can show me you’re up for the task is by taking and excelling in one of my courses. Another route is to collaborate with me on an independent study project for a semester. Rest assured, once we both feel confident that we’re a good fit for each other, funding and working on research projects will follow.

If you are interested, send me a formal email with your meeting goals, questions, and proposed meeting times with the subject title “VizUS Prospective Student: Your first and last name #2″ (e.g., VizUS Prospective Student: John Doe #2”). In your email, please attach the following documents:

  • your CV (or resume)
  • Transcript,
  • Research statement (in PDF format). Ensure that your research statement clearly describes what you aim to research under my guidance.
  • TOEFL or equivalent English test score (if you are an international student)
  • GRE scores (if applicable)

Please ensure that your email contains the correct subject title and attached files in order to receive a response from me. It becomes readily apparent upon reading your email whether you have taken the time to read this page and familiarize yourself with my research. Due to the overwhelming volume of emails I receive daily, I cannot respond to emails that lack the appropriate subject title and required documents.
